Kindness Club: Bird Feeder

Although it is winter and the ground is covered in snow (at least at the time of this writing), there are bound to be a few hungry birds in your backyard. Ice and snow storms can make it hard for birds like downy woodpeckers, northern cardinals, and mourning doves to find food in the winter. So, let’s extend some kindness to our feathered friends by creating a handmade bird feeder!

Supplies:

• 1 cardboard paper tube
• 1-2 tbsp of vegetable shortening or peanut butter
• ¼ cup of birdseed
• 1-2 feet of yarn or twine (depending on how far you would like it to hang)

Steps:

1. Clean off any extra bits of paper from the tube.
2. Cover it in a thin layer of peanut butter, sunflower butter, soy butter, or vegetable shortening.
3. Pour the birdseed onto a plate and gently roll the toilet paper roll over the plate to pick up the birdseed.
4. Thread a piece of string through the tube and tie it into a loop.
