May is Mental Health Awareness Month

By: GEPL Staff

May is Mental Health Awareness Month – a time to learn about mental health disorders   and behavioral health issues so that we can discuss them openly without ignorance and with compassion. Behavioral health describes the connection between behaviors and the health and well-being of the body, mind, and spirit. Mental illness and addiction can affect all of us. What can you do?

  1. Learn about Mental Health . Our emotional health can range from thriving to struggling. No matter what you’re experiencing, there are ways to take action to support yourself and those around you.
  2. Take a mental health quiz .
  3. Read youth picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels about mental health disorders, emotional regulation tools, and emotional recognition.
  4. Read adult books about mental health.
  5. At the library, you can
    • browse the Mental Health Awareness Month book displays.
    • participate in library programs about mental health.
    • talk to Glen Ellyn Youth and Family Counseling Service (GEYFCS) Outreach Program Coordinator Jessica Gul at a table on the 2nd floor. Jessica can provide referrals for housing and employment services and schedule appointments for mental health services with a clinician at GEYFCS.
